MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE — Mozambique’s Chamber of Commerce says stronger business links with China could help attract investment, expand local production and create employment.
President of the Mozambique Chamber of Commerce Lucas Chachine says Macao can play an important role in connecting Mozambican businesses with investors and companies in mainland China.
Mr Chachine explained that Mozambique is seeking partnerships that can strengthen local enterprises while supporting the country’s wider industrialisation drive.
He said priority areas for cooperation include agriculture, agribusiness, agro-processing, tourism, logistics, the blue economy and the automotive sector.
Mr Chachine noted that Mozambique’s ports and regional transport corridors also give the country an important position in Southern African trade.
He added that stronger cooperation with Chinese and Macao businesses could help local companies access new markets, investment and commercial partnerships.
The remarks came as Mozambique hosted business engagements involving representatives from mainland China, Macao and other Portuguese-speaking countries.
A major China–Portuguese-speaking Countries business meeting held in Maputo brought together more than 350 government and business representatives.
The meeting resulted in 24 cooperation agreements worth about US$150 million, covering areas including infrastructure, trade, professional services and academic cooperation.
Mr Chachine maintained that investment should contribute to increasing domestic production and developing stronger Mozambican businesses rather than focusing only on the extraction and export of raw materials.
He said industrial development and job creation remain important priorities as Mozambique seeks to unlock opportunities from its natural resources and strategic location.
Greater cooperation with China could also help Mozambique strengthen its role as a trade and logistics gateway for neighbouring landlocked countries.
