China’s Zero-Tariff Policy Opens New Opportunities for Botswana Exports

Africa China Daily Desk

GABORONE — China’s decision to grant zero-tariff treatment to products from African countries is opening new opportunities for Botswana exporters seeking greater access to the Chinese market.

The policy, which took effect on May 1, 2026, extends zero-tariff treatment across tariff lines for African countries that maintain diplomatic relations with China.

Botswana’s Ministry responsible for trade confirmed that qualifying Botswana products can now enter the Chinese market tariff-free under the arrangement, potentially improving the competitiveness of local exports.

Among the sectors that could benefit are beef and livestock products, horticulture, processed foods, leather, textiles, arts and crafts, as well as selected mineral-based products.

The opportunity is particularly significant for Botswana as the country seeks to diversify its economy and increase exports of processed and value-added products rather than relying mainly on raw commodities.

Access to the Chinese market, however, will also require Botswana producers to meet standards relating to certification, packaging, documentation and product quality.

China has increasingly positioned trade and investment as an important part of its economic relationship with Africa, with the zero-tariff initiative expected to support agricultural modernisation, industrialisation and greater value addition across the continent.

For Botswana, the policy presents an opportunity not only to increase exports, but also to attract investment into industries capable of producing goods for the Chinese market.
