GABORONE, Botswana – China emerged as Botswana’s second-largest export destination in June 2026, receiving goods worth P737.6 million, according to Statistics Botswana.
China accounted for 14.9 percent of Botswana’s total exports during the month, behind the United Arab Emirates, which received 24.6 percent.
Botswana’s total exports for June stood at P4.95 billion, while imports were valued at P7.28 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of about P2.33 billion.
Asia remained Botswana’s biggest regional export market, absorbing 56.7 percent of total exports, worth P2.81 billion.
Minerals continued to dominate Botswana’s export basket. Diamonds accounted for 56.1 percent of total exports, while copper contributed 26.9 percent. Machinery and electrical equipment followed at 6.2 percent.
China’s position as Botswana’s second-largest export destination highlights the growing importance of the Chinese market as Botswana continues to strengthen trade links with major international partners.
The figures also come at a time when Botswana is placing greater emphasis on economic diversification, value addition and the development of new export sectors beyond traditional mineral commodities.
Stronger access to the Chinese market could create further opportunities for local producers, particularly as the country looks to increase value addition and reduce its dependence on traditional mineral exports.
The June figures also highlight the need to broaden the range of products Botswana exports to China, especially in agriculture, manufacturing and other value-added sectors.
